Ingredients:
My Aunt "Icky" (Sarah) was a smart, fun-loving, hardworking lady. Her family's picturesque dairy farm borders on the Great Sacandaga Lake in Mayfield, NY. She always had fabulous desserts and plenty of fresh milk whenever we visited.
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup HOT water
- 1 cup molasses
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9" x 13" x 2" pan. In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Beat the egg, add to the above, and set aside.
In a second bowl, combine well all remaining ingredients (except for the water and molasses). Add flour/spice mixture to the large bowl and combine well. In a third bowl, mix HOT water and molasses, then add into large bowl, stirring gently to combine. Pour mixture into greased pan and bake for 35 minutes.
